Finding Your Files
web-friend >> help >> win9x >>Finding Your Files ....

The way you work with files is very different in 95 as well. While you still have a file manager (actually you have 2 of them right off the bat) you also work with objects inside of windows. If you double-click on the Icon called "My Computer" at the top left of your screen, you will see a list of your drives. By double-clicking on these, you can open drives, and folders to see your files. Right clicking on many things (including the drives) you can find a pop up option called "Explore". This is the new File Manager for 95 (your old one is still there and we will get to that in a second) Explorer looks like this:

The first big difference you’ll notice is that the drive letters are listed inside the left window, instead of along the top (below the menu ribbon). You can double click on one to open it, or you can click ONCE on the little plus sign next to it to open (or expand) that drive or folder. Note: after you do, the + sign will change to a - sign, - and clicking once on it will cause the reverse to happen. (shrink it back up)

Finding the old File Manager:

From here you can look for a file in your Windows Directory called winfile.exe. This is your OLD file manager (and may be more comfortable for you) Once you find it inside this explorer window, you can RIGHT click and drag it to your desktop as well. Yea it is kind of like using one file manager to find another one.

 Opening Up "My Computer"

When Windows 95 is first installed - It will create an icon in the upper left hand portion of the screen called, "My Computer".

When you first double click on it you will see something like the picture here.

Naturally the number of drives, and what they are called will differ from one computer to another. You can see the A: drive floppy, the C: Hard Disk drive, the Control Panel where you change your settings, and your Printers folder. These items will be on most computers. To look for your files or directories (Remember that they are now called folders) you just need to double click on one one of the drives to open it up.

The yellow folders on drive C: represent the different directories (now called folders) that you used to see inside your File Manager. If you would double click on them, they would open up another window of what is inside that folder (directory).

Note: These pictures represent the real thing. If you delete something here - IT IS GONE, you are not just deleting a picture / icon of a short-cut.  The file, or the folder (and all the files inside that folder) will be deleted.

If you notice that there are 2 different looks, one that shows big pictures of a folder with the name under it, and another that shows a "list" of the files, when they were created, how big they are, what type they are etc.  .... Well that is covered in another section of this little help section
